The Federal Home Loan Mortgage Corporation, commonly known as Freddie Mac, is a government-sponsored enterprise (GSE) that buys mortgages, pools them, and sells them as a mortgage-backed security (MBS) to private investors on the open market. In the wake of the 2008 financial crisis, the Federal Housing Finance Agency (FHFA) placed Freddie Mac and Fannie Mae under the conservatorship of the federal government, where it remains today.
Originally founded in 1970, Freddie Mac is based in Tysons Corner, Virginia.
