In a fascinating look behind the scenes into the life of one of housing’s biggest players, New York Magazine has a photo essay recapping one day with Julián Castro, the secretary of the Department of Housing and Urban Development.
The article, entitled “A Day With Julián Castro: Cabinet Secretary, Legal-Pad Enthusiast, Rising Democrat,” comes from photographer Mark Peterson spending Oct. 1 with Castro in Washington, D.C.
Castro began his Oct. 1 by joining his wife and walking his daughter to school.
Later in the day, Castro addressed HUD staffers after a potential government shutdown was avoided.
Castro also spent part of his day At the Atlantic’s Washington Ideas Forum, chatting backstage with Sen. Cory Booker, D-NJ, and speaking on stage about the effect of gentrification on neighborhoods.
Castro also met with his British equivalent, Brandon Lewis, to discuss the housing situation in the United Kingdom.
The last shot of the essay shows Castro at his desk, reading through briefing materials. On the desk are quite a few used legal pads, which he keeps if he should ever need to refer back to them, as well as the day’s issue of the New York Times, the Wall Street Journal, and the Washington Post.
Commenting on the picture, Castro said he does a lot more reading through his mobile device, including “obviously Politico, and various other sites.”
