Reverse Mortgage Industry Enters ‘Golden Gate to Retirement’ at Upcoming Meeting

Reverse mortgage industry members, government officials, academic researchers and aging experts will gather next week in San Francisco to address the challenges of funding longevity for American seniors at the 2015 National Reverse Mortgage Lenders Association (NRMLA) Meeting and Expo held November 15-18.

This year’s conference, aptly titled “The Golden Gate to Retirement: Reverse Mortgages & Funding Longevity,” will engage these various professionals about the importance of consumer protections for borrowers, as well as covering developments in the regulatory landscape, major research findings on the acceptance and satisfaction of reverse mortgages, and the obstacles facing older adults who want to remain living independently in their own homes.

“Our annual meeting is an opportunity for reverse mortgage professionals representing all aspects of the industry to learn and share best practices for effectively serving the borrowers who benefit from this financial tool, which treats the home as a means to supplement retirement income and funding strategies in a sustainable way,” said NRMLA President Peter Bell in a written statement.

Speakers at this year’s event include several government officials with the Department of Housing and Urban Development (HUD) as well as the Consumer Financial Protection Bureau (CFPB), including Kathleen Zadareky, HUD’s deputy assistant secretary for single family housing who also manages the daily operation of the Home Equity Conversion Mortgage program.

Also attending the annual gathering is Karin Hill, a senior policy advisor at HUD, and Nora Dowd Eisenhower, who serves as the assistant director for the Office of Older Americans at the CFPB.

“Members of our association always look forward to the opportunity to hear directly from, and interact with, the people who design and implement the policies that regulate the HECM program,” Bell said. “HUD and CFPB’s presence at the meeting is reflective of our efforts to work together to improve the product and processes for consumers.”

Apart from the conference sessions and keynote speakers, this year’s meeting also includes a day of service when NRMLA members and their families will support local seniors in need.

Apart from the conference sessions, this year’s event will also include a day of service Sunday morning, Nov. 15, where NRMLA members and their families will have the opportunity to volunteer at the Curry Senior Center, preparing meals and distributing Thanksgiving bags.

Located in San Francisco’s Tenderloin district, the Curry Senior Center provides homeless and nearly-homeless seniors with a range of integrated services including health care, housing, nutrition as well as providing them a sense of community.

The following day, on Monday (Nov. 16) evening, NRMLA member companies will host a benefit and silent auction to raise money for the Curry Center.

An often misguided premise I see on social media is that lower mortgage rates are doing nothing for housing demand. That’s ok — very few people are looking at the data without an agenda. However, the point of this tracker is to show you evidence that lower rates have already changed housing data. So, let’s […]
