Mayor Bloomberg proposes post-Sandy NYC flood plan

New York Major Michael Bloomberg assessed what risks are for the years to come and allocated $20 billion for a suggested system of flood barriers to protect low-lying areas from storms as a result of Hurricane Sandy’s impact.

Additionally, Bloomberg identified other coastal defense plans including dunes, beach widening, tidal barriers and a network of bulkheads, levees and other protections.

The mayor released a 400-page report detailing more than 250 recommendations for how to confront the risks New York faces and build a stronger, more resilient city.

“The report also includes five chapters focused specifically on the areas that suffered the most damage from Sandy,” Bloomberg explained.

He added, “For each community, we looked at their specific vulnerabilities, and for each, we developed a tailored, workable plan for a more resilient future.”
