T-Mobile hit by data breach, 2 million customers affected

Company says financial information was not exposed

T-Mobile announced this week it has experienced a data breach that exposed the personal information of two million of its customers to hackers.

The mobile service provider said Thursday that customers affected by the breach have been notified via text message. The company said that personal information that may have been exposed to the hackers includes name, billing ZIP code, phone number, email address, as well as account number and type.

The company explained in its announcement that its cybersecurity team uncovered the breach on Aug. 20 and shut down the unauthorized access to certain customer data. In its note to customers, the company said that the information exposed did not include personal financial data, such as credit card information, or sensitive personal information like Social Security numbers and passwords.

From T-Mobile’s announcement:

On August 20, our cyber-security team discovered and shut down an unauthorized access to certain information, including yours, and we promptly reported it to authorities. None of your financial data (including credit card information) or social security numbers were involved, and no passwords were compromised. However, you should know that some of your personal information may have been exposed, which may have included one or more of the following: name, billing zip code, phone number, email address, account number and account type (prepaid or postpaid).
