Which presidential candidate is better for housing?

Housing price recovery was stronger in states Clinton and Trump lost

The American people currently have two options for the leader of U.S., The self-described successful real estate executive Donald Trump, or the former U.S. Senator, first lady and U.S. Secretary of State, Hillary Clinton.

When asked which candidate would spur higher home prices, Trump has a 10-point lead on Clinton, according to a recent report from Trulia. When asked what would likely happen if Trump gets elected, 39% said prices would increase, compared to 29% with the same answer if Clinton is elected.

In fact, 47% of Democrats said home prices would rise if Trump is elected, compared to 24% who said the same about Clinton. About 38% of Republicans said home prices would rise if Clinton is elected, compared to 33% who said the same about Trump.

Independents favored rising home prices under Trump rather than Clinton at 34% versus 28%. Millennials also agree that home prices would rise under Trump at 49% compared to Clinton's 26%.

That being said, in places where housing prices had a strong recover, neither candidate was popular.

This chart shows the economic recovery in areas won by Clinton versus areas won by Trump.

Trulia Chief Economist Ralph McLaughlin notes that Americans probably don’t have much information about either candidates’ positions on the U.S. housing market.

“Voters shouldn’t necessarily be surprised by the little attention that Hillary Clinton and Donald Trump have paid to housing this election cycle,” McLaughlin said. “Eight years ago, housing and the economy were the main talking points of Obama and Romney because millions of homeowners were going through foreclosure and the economy was in shambles.”

“Today, the housing market and US economy look much healthier, and as such, candidates have turned their attention to more popular issues such as immigration, gun control, and national security,” he said.

It’s no surprise Americans don’t know much about the candidates’ plans for housing as there has been so little talk about it this election. Some of the little talk that has come out involves smear campaigns. In a new campaign ad posted online by Clinton’s campaign, Clinton claims that Trump “rooted for the real estate crash,” and uses Trump’s own words against him to supposedly prove that point.
